No Signs of Slowing Down: Ivanka Trump, Real-Estate Mogul and Shoe Designer

Why design a shoe collection?
I have an addiction to shoes that many women share. I inherited mine from my mother, but I felt that there was a real spot in the marketplace for what I wanted to design, which is an affordable, high-style shoe. Right now, you either see designs tending toward dowdy, extremely conservative or shoes with 10-inch Lucite heels. There isn’t much in the middle that feels refined, elegant and beautiful.

What makes a good shoe? Is it the design or comfort?
It’s a combination of both. There aren’t many people who can craft a high-quality shoe. I was very fortunate to partner with Marc Fisher, because he really understands what goes into shoe construction. But I have to think about comfort, because I’m on my feet all day in New York. So comfort is important, but not at the total expense of style. The marriage of those two entities makes a great shoe.

You’ve also designed a bridal shoe collection. What shoe should Kate Middleton wear?
We actually drew something up for her just for fun! The shoe, of course, has to work in conjunction with the dress. She’s fortunate that she can wear a high heel and doesn’t have to tailor to height restrictions, which is nice, because Prince William is quite tall. But an elegant heel in a gorgeous white satin is a classic choice. We embellished ours with floral detail, which attached at the ankle strap with a beautiful tint of sparkle on the heel.

You lived in D.C. for a while. Any favorite restaurants or spots?
It’s been a while now. But when I was in college [at Georgetown], the fancy night out for us girls was at [Cafe] Milano. I love D.C.; it’s amazing. I had my dog when I was there, so I spent a lot of time in the various parks. It’s just an incredible place, Georgetown specifically.

Do your shoes, bags and jewelry work well in Washington?
Absolutely. D.C. style is really classic and polished. It can be very feminine. Those attributes are very important to my aesthetic. I’d say my time in Washington definitely influenced my style.

How have you managed to stay so stylish during your pregnancy?
I don’t think any pregnant woman feels totally stylish! But I’m pretty fortunate in that while I’ve outgrown most of my clothing, there are still some things I can wiggle into. The next month will probably present some more challenges, though.
